February 25, 1927 – September 19, 2023
Verdie Lee Chatman Our Beloved Mother, Grand Mother and Great Grandmother Verdie Lee Chatman was born, Verdie Lee Jackson, in 1927 the year of our Lord in Corsicana Texas, Navarro County. She was the daughter of Estol Bluitt and Iona Bluitt. Iona Matt married Estol H. Bluitt when Verdie was six years old. The Bluitt family lived to the southwest of Mexia and still own thirty acres of land with oil, given to the freed slaves. Estol accepted Verdie as his adopted daughter and the three moved to Mexia where both he and she enjoyed driving to school in his very own Ford Model T. While in school, Verdie Lee, came upon the love of her life, George Marvin Chatman. He was a native of Mexia whose father Aurby, lived in Rosebud Texas and had a medical practice as a doctor. George and Verdie were to be married but it was delayed as George went off to fight in World War II. Verdie and her parents moved to Dallas Texas. Verdie attended Prairie View College and Nursing school where she received a diploma as an LVN. World War II ended in 1945 and the couple were reunited and eventually married and moved to Corpus Christi, Texas. The couple had six children, Iona Robbins RN, Blossie Chatman RN. MA, Dr. Ester Pollard MD. FACP, Charlotte Donald Director Of Operations, of a factory, Charlene Williams RN, Paul Chatman, Work Coordinator City of Corpus Christi. Verdie also leaves 13 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Both Verdie and George retired from the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station where George worked as an Electrical Aircraft Maintenance technician and Verdie as a base Nurse. Verdie also worked as a LVN at Sphon Shoreline Hospital where she retired. After 39 years of marriage, in the year of 1985, George Marvin Chatman, passed away and now our beloved mother, Verdie Lee Chatman (Madea), passed peacefully on Sept.19, 2023 has gone to join Daddy. Like our father (G-daddy) who is clearly missed, we will miss our beloved mother. Madea and daddy you taught us so much in life, and instilled in us the belief that when our time has come , we will be together again. The family wishes to thank Dr. Jude, Dr. Damaraju, Dr. Kaldes, the nurses on A8, ICU nurses at Sphon Shoreline Hospital and her home caregiver Linda Ruiz for tending to Verdie in her time of need
